A People Called by My Name                                          3/29/2009      ßà

We find in the Bible eleven times, “Called by My Name”. What does this mean? What is the name God wants us to see in these verses? To answer this question we first have to understand who “My People” and “His People” and “Thy People” refer to in the Bible. But since “My People” occurs 217 times I am only going to show the list of “My People” in the New Testament.

My People in the NT

Mt 2:6  And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

Ac 7:34  I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

Ro 9:25  As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.

Ro 9:26  And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.

2Co 6:16  And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Re 18:4  And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

And thus, from this list we conclude that “My People” always refers to the elect of God, those who were chosen unto salvation before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4). And since “His People” occurs 156 times in the Bible, I am only going to show the list of “His People” in the New Testament.

His People in the NT

Mt 1:21  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Lu 1:68  Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

Lu 1:77  To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

Lu 7:16  And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

Ro 11:1  I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

Ro 11:2  God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,

Ro 15:10  And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.

Heb 10:30  For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

Re 21:3  And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

And thus, from this list we conclude that “His People” also refers to the elect of God, those who were chosen unto salvation before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4). Let us now consider all eleven times the expression “Called by My Name” occurs.

Called by My Name

2Ch 7:14  If my people, which are called <07121> by My name <08034>, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Isa 43:7  Even every one that is called <07121> by My name <08034>: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

Isa 65:1  I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called <07121> by My name <08034>.

Jer 7:10  And come and stand before me in this house, which is called <07121> by My name <08034>, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

Jer 7:11  Is this house, which is called <07121> by My name <08034>, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

Jer 7:14  Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called <07121> by My name <08034>, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.

Jer 7:30  For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the LORD: they have set their abominations in the house which is called <07121> by my name <08034>, to pollute it.

Jer 25:29  For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called <07121> by my name <08034>, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.

Jer 32:34  But they set their abominations in the house, which is called <07121> by my name <08034>, to defile it.

Jer 34:15  And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called <07121> by my name <08034>:

Am 9:12  That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called <07121> by my name <08034>, saith the LORD that doeth this.

And are these verses equivalent to all eight places where the expression “Called by Thy Name” occurs?

Called by Thy Name

1Ki 8:43  Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called <07121> by Thy name <08034>.

2Ch 6:33  Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for; that all people of the earth may know thy name, and fear thee, as doth thy people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called <07121> by Thy name <08034>.

Isa 4:1  And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called <07121> by Thy name <08034>, to take away our reproach.

Isa 63:19  We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called <07121> by Thy name <08034>.

Jer 14:9  Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called <07121> by Thy name <08034>; leave us not.

Jer 15:16  Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called <07121> by Thy name <08034>, O LORD God of hosts.

Da 9:18  O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called <07121> by Thy name <08034>: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.

Da 9:19  O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called <07121> by Thy name <08034>.

From this list we conclude that “Called by Thy Name” means the same as “Called by My Name”.

Now the question arises if “Thy People” is the same group of people that are indicated by “My People” and “His People”. The list of “Thy People” is 122 verses long. Therefore we will shorten this list to only the last five verses.

Thy People

Na 3:13  Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.

Na 3:18  Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.

Hab 3:13  Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine anointed; thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck. Selah.

Lu 2:32  A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Ac 23:5  Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

From this short list we conclude that “Thy People” are not necessarily “My People”. Especially from Acts 23:5 we can see that “Thy People” refers to the entire nation of Israel, lock, stock and barrel.

Let us now consider the exact meaning of the words 07121 and 08034 that we found in the eleven verses and eight verses above.

And thus the expression “Called by My Name” or “Called by Thy Name” mean exactly what the words convey: the calling by a new name. What is that new name by which God condescends Himself to be named by the same name that “His people”, His elect, are named by? There is only one possibility. It is the name Israel for Christ is also called Israel. We can conclude that by harmonizing the two verses Matt 2:15 and Hos 11:1 and by looking at Isa 49:3, and considering its context. (See Sermon of 3/29/2009). Therefore this will be the main conclusion of this study.

But if that is so, then the concept that Israel always refers to the entire nation of Israel is false. Let us first look at the expression “Thy People Israel” in the Bible.

Thy People Israel

De 21:8  Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel’s charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them.

De 26:15  Look down from thy holy habitation, from heaven, and bless thy people Israel, and the land which thou hast given us, as thou swarest unto our fathers, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

2Sa 7:24  For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God.

1Ki 8:30  And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest, forgive.

1Ki 8:33  When thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house:

1Ki 8:34  Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers.

1Ki 8:36  Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.

1Ki 8:38  What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:

1Ki 8:41  Moreover concerning a stranger, that is not of thy people Israel, but cometh out of a far country for thy name’s sake;

1Ki 8:43  Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by thy name.

1Ki 8:52  That thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant, and unto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee.

1Ch 17:21  And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?

1Ch 17:22  For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God.

2Ch 6:21  Hearken therefore unto the supplications of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, which they shall make toward this place: hear thou from thy dwelling place, even from heaven; and when thou hearest, forgive.

2Ch 6:24  And if thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee; and shall return and confess thy name, and pray and make supplication before thee in this house;

2Ch 6:25  Then hear thou from the heavens, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest to them and to their fathers.

2Ch 6:27  Then hear thou from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, when thou hast taught them the good way, wherein they should walk; and send rain upon thy land, which thou hast given unto thy people for an inheritance.

2Ch 6:29  Then what prayer or what supplication soever shall be made of any man, or of all thy people Israel, when every one shall know his own sore and his own grief, and shall spread forth his hands in this house:

2Ch 6:32  Moreover concerning the stranger, which is not of thy people Israel, but is come from a far country for thy great name’s sake, and thy mighty hand, and thy stretched out arm; if they come and pray in this house;

2Ch 6:33  Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for; that all people of the earth may know thy name, and fear thee, as doth thy people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called by thy name.

2Ch 20:7  Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?

Isa 10:22  For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

Jer 32:21  And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror;

Lu 2:32  A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

The very first verse on this list, Deut 21:8, already indicates that “Thy People Israel” must refer to only those who are the elect of God, for God indicates that they are those “whom thou hast redeemed”. “Thy People Israel” cannot refer to the entire nation of Israel, or the children of Israel, for we know from Heb 3 that most of the children of Israel died in the wilderness in unbelief, meaning clearly that they were not saved.

Let us now focus on one verse out of the list “Called by My Name”, which is Amos 9:12.

Amos 9:12 states, “All the heathen which are called <07121> (8738) by My name.”

This verse is repeated in the NT in Acts 15:17. The parsings are indicated by (8738) and (5769).

Acts 15:17 states, “All the Gentiles, upon whom My name is called <1941> (5769).”

De 28:10  And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called <07121> (8738) by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.

2Sa 6:2  And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called <07121> (8738) by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.

2Sa 12:28  Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called <07121> (8738) after my name.

1Ch 13:6  And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjathjearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called <07121> (8738) on it.

2Ch 7:14  If my people, which are called <07121> (8738) by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Es 2:14  In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called <07121> (8738) by name.

Ec 6:10  That which hath been is named <07121> (8738) already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

All the verses containing <1941> (5769)               There is only one:

Ac 15:17  That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called <1941> (5769), saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.

And thus we see that the expression “Called by My Name”, or “Called by Thy Name” refers to the name “Israel”. Christ is called Israel and all those who are “in Christ” are also called Israel. (Sermon of 3/29/09)
