Please open your Bibles to the Gospel According to John, John 12:12 (2X). Today churches all over the world are celebrating Palm Sunday, celebrating the event that the Lord Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem victoriously riding on a donkey. Children all over the world are waving their palm branches to indicate that they are remembering his event of Palm Sunday, which historically occurred one week before Easter Sunday, the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead. All these are joyful celebrations, because Satan was defeated and Christ was the victor. All these things came to pass on April 3 and on April 5 in the year AD 33. Then God wrote these things in the Bible to let us know what was accomplished in AD 33. And thus it is important that we get to know and will understand all the things God has done in AD 33. To celebrate Palm Sunday like the churches are doing today does not really improve our understanding. It only tends to produce slogans. Do you know what a slogan is? It is a label that you slap on this historical event, but the label does not explain anything. The label allows us to put this event in a file, and then we store the file in a file cabinet of our mind, and that is the end of it. So let us not store this event in a file, but let us see if we can understand what God recorded here for us, and let us see what God want us to think about when we read about the joy and excitement of the Lord Jesus making His appearance in Jerusalem. We read in John 12:12-19,

·        Hosanna, Blessed Is the King of Israel (John 12:12-19)

John 12:12-19  On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

13  Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, “Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.”

14  And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

15  Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.

16  These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

17  The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

18  For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

19  The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? Behold, the world is gone after him.

“Behold, the world is gone after Him.” This was an utterance out of envy, but it was full of truth. 57 days later more than 3000 souls were added to the church of Jesus Christ, and from that day forward the church grew by leaps and bounds. Three hundred years later the church of Jesus Christ had conquered the Roman Empire. Let us now take a close look at verse 13.

#1.       The First and Second Rejoicing (John 12:13, 5:28, 6:44, Eph 1:3-6, Matt 7:13-14)

The people shouted: “Hosanna; Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” What is the meaning of “Hosanna”? Literally it means: “Save now.” It was a cry for salvation. It was a cry for the miracle of God to transform their souls into something that God is pleased to dwell in. Let us think about this now. When would the second time in history be that the people of God are praying that they may be a vessel for God to dwell in? When, indeed, would they be crying, “Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord?” Indeed the second time will be when the Lord Jesus comes again on the Last Day, and He will revive all His saints that are in the graves, and they will rejoice and cry, “Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” At that time we will truly be the dwelling place of God, because we will be the Bride of Christ. We read in John 5:28,

John 5:28  Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,  29  And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Who are they who have done good? And who are they who have done evil? Please turn in your Bibles to the Epistle to the Ephesians, Eph 1:3 (2X). Who are they who are the saints who will have done good, and who will be the Bride of Christ? They are all those who have been drawn by the Father to the Lord Jesus Christ. For example, we read in John 6:44, “No man CAN come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” And who are they who have been drawn by the Father to the Lord Jesus Christ? They are all the elect who have been chosen by the Father to be in Christ from before the foundation of the world. When the Lord Jesus declared that no man CAN come to Him except the Father draw him, it means that not one additional person can be added. It means that all the elect are in view. We read in Eph 1:3-6,

Eph 1:3-6, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

5  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

6  To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

And so, all the elect have been chosen by the Father before the foundation of the world, and all of them have been drawn by the Father to the Lord Jesus in our lifetime. Not one will be added and not one will be forgotten. These are the saints who will rejoice on the Last Day and cry out, “Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” These are the saints who will rejoice that Christ has come to take them home to be the Bride of Christ. But that is only a small fraction of the worldwide church. We know that because the Lord Jesus said in Matt 7:13-14 that there will be many who will be on the broad way to Hell, and there are only a few who will find the narrow way to heaven. Please turn in your Bibles to the Gospel of Matthew, Matt 7:13 (2X). The Lord stated here that the wickedness of man is so great that the majority of them will end up in Hell. It is only a remnant who will be inspired by the Holy Spirit to find the true Gospel and in believing he true Gospel find their way to Heaven. And so, we read here in Matt 7:13-14,

Matt 7:13-14,  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Only a few in the church find their way to Heaven. But where are the many in the church that are on the broad way to Hell? Please turn in your Bibles to the Revelation of Jesus Christ, Rev 17:1 (2X).

#2.       The Harlot Church in the Last Days? (Rev 17:1-6, 12:14)

Now the Lord reveals to us the wickedness of the people in the church, the wickedness of the Harlot Church of Rev 17 and in Rev 18. Near the end of time the majority of the church is going apostate, because the many who will be on their way to Hell will dominate the doctrines of the church. The history of the Old Testament church will simply be repeated. We know that the Old Testament church has gone very apostate, for they did not even recognize Christ as the Messiah; they ignored His warnings and they crucified Him. And so it will be with the New Testament church. They will not recognize the warning signals of the Final Tribulation Period, and Christ shall come upon them as a thief in the night; not silently like thief, but unexpectedly like a thief in the night. We read in Rev 17:1-6

Rev 17:1-6,   And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:

2  With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

3  So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns (indicating the image of Satan, Rev 12:3, or of Antichrist, Rev 13:1)

4  And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: (Apostacy is spiritual fornication)

6  And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration (Lit: I marvelled with great marvel).

The woman was drunken with the blood of the saints. Is there any doubt who she represents? Who always persecutes the saints? The saints claim that they alone preach the true Gospel. Who is offended by that claim? The world does not care about that. The world does not care about the true Gospel or the false gospel; they do not know that there is a difference. But to the false church it does make a difference. To the false church the Gospel that we preach is an offense. Therefore, persecution of the saints is always done by the false church, and the majority of the people in the church are deceived by the false church and by their doctrines. That the woman is drunken with the blood of the saints is a strong indication that she represents the majority of the church of our days.

John wrote in verse 6, “I marvelled with great marvel.” Why did John marvel? He marvelled because he had seen the woman before. Where? Please turn in your Bibles to Rev 12:14 (2X). And notice where the Harlot Church Babylon was found: in the wilderness, where the woman of Rev 12 was directed to live. We read in Rev 12:14,

Rev 12:14, And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Here in Rev 12:6,14 the woman is the persecuted church. After the cross the true church is always persecuted, until we reach the period near the end of time. And now the majority of the church is no longer persecuted. The woman is still in the wilderness of this world, but now she develops false doctrines, which means that she is now engaging in idolatry. The city of God is in the Bible identified with the New Jerusalem. The city of Satan is identified throughout the Bible as Babylon.

The question we have before us is this: How will the Harlot Church be judged? Yes, of course, the Harlot Church will be judged in the life hereafter. That is a certainty. Please turn again to Rev 17:16. But God writes here in Rev 17 that the Harlot Church will already be judged in this life here on earth. Yes, God will give us a sign that the end is very near.

·        How Will the Harlot Be Judged? (Rev 17:16–17, Matt 12:26)

The Harlot Church preaches a religion that is acceptable to the world, for it is a religion without Christ. She enjoys the favor of the world; they lavish her with gold, pearls, and purple raiment. But she also persecutes the saints who refuse to join her. It is all abomination to God, and as soon as her work is done, God will put an end to this, as we read in Revelation 17:16–17:

16  And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

17  For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

These words contain a prophecy for near the end of time. We need to understand this prophecy.

In other words, one part of the kingdom of Satan shall fight against another part of the kingdom of Satan. The Lord Jesus said in Matt 12:26 that under these conditions Satan’s kingdom shall not stand. This self-destruction of the kingdom of Satan shall intensify as we approach the end of time. Just as the true church shall disappear when her work is done, so the harlot church shall disappear when her work is done. The kings in charge of the government during the final tribulation period will see to it. The false church shall be abolished, and finally the Beast, the Antichrist, shall reign without any church. This is something that shall come to pass not suddenly, but very gradually, so as not to cause alarm among people who still remember something out of the Bible. But we see it has already come to pass in Europe. I have witnessed this personally. Churches are closing, being converted to museums or restaurants, or being demolished entirely. The memory of Christ is being erased.

And look at what is happening here in our country. This self-destruction of the kingdom of Satan does not always proceed with literal fire. Satan is not stupid. He is not always destroying with literal fire the property that he already owns. We must keep our eyes open for a spiritual fulfillment of this prophecy. We are studying the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which is a prophecy written mostly in symbolic terms, and we should endeavor to understand the symbolism in these Scriptures.

For example, if the pastor of a very large congregation and his wife empty out the treasure chest and the bank account of that church, and escape to another state, or escape to another country, what have they done? Essentially they have delivered their entire congregation, and their huge building, including their lucrative TV evangelism, to Satan, and they have so thoroughly destroyed the church as if they have put the church on fire. Each one of this congregation now knows that is was all a charade. The goal of that pastor was not to spread the Gospel, but to deceive people and to rake in more money. But understand now the symbolism. It is a greater destruction than if the pastor would secretly have put the building on fire, for the congregation would have put up the funds to rebuild that building and to restore everything that was damaged. But now that the pastor has robbed the church of all its treasures, it has been a greater destruction than if he had torched the building. Is this a wicked act of that pastor? Yes indeed. And it is an fulfillment of the prophecy of Rev 17:16.

These are things that are happening today, in 2013. This is not an imaginary scenario. This actually came to pass this year. This was a mega-church. We can expect that there are more mega-churches that will be destroyed in this manner, “For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled” (Rev 17:17).

Let us look at another example: if the pastor of a very large and worldwide known church building declares bankruptcy, and decides to sell this church building to a denomination which was already declared during the Reformation, 400 years ago, to be an accursed idolatry, (Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day XXX, Q/A 80) then what has this pastor done? Essentially he has delivered his large church building and his TV evangelism to Satan, and he has so thoroughly destroyed that church, more effectively than if he has put that building on fire. In fact, this legalized crime of that pastor was more effective than destroying the building with fire. If that building had burnt by fire, the congregation would have gathered all their resources and with great resolve they would have put up the money required to rebuild that building. But now they realize that they have been deceived, and that it was all a charade. This was not a financial mistake. This was the greedy act of a pastor who is not saved.

Now consider his: These things actually came to pass this year, in 2013. If we keep our eyes open we can witness the fulfillment of the prophecies of Revelation 17. And then shall the kingdom of Antichrist be complete. The shadow of Christ shall have been erased. The Beast, the ten horns, and the false prophet shall have done their work—and now it shall be their turn to be done away with. What now should be our response? We should rejoice, for the Lord is coming soon.

Please turn in your Bible to Isaiah chapter 26. God says that we will be able to see that the world is coming close to the end of time when we see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet, and we will see this abomination standing in the Holy Place, which means we will see it in our government and in the church. God says in Isaiah 26:20–21,

20  Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

21  For, behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

This means, then, that we should not fret about the worsening moral situation in the world, but we should rejoice that the Lord is coming soon. Is this condition limited to our own country? Please turn to Isaiah chapter 34. This passage answers the question of whether the Beast is limited to just some regions in this world or whether his reign is worldwide. God says in Isaiah 34:2, “For the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter.”

Chapter 34 in the prophecy of Isaiah speaks of God’s wrath upon all the nations of the world, and it is followed by a parabolic description of Hell. This is not a judgment on all the people in the world, for the saints are safely tucked away in the enclaves that God has provided for us. Please turn to Rev 18:4 (2X). And remember that God’s wrath does not come because the calendar says so, but because the churches in all the nations are worshipping idols. It is expected of the heathen that they worship idols. But when the churches also turn to false gods, God will put an end to these insults.

When we see the apostate conditions in the church we must heed the warnings of the Lord as He stated it so clearly in Rev 18:4-6. We read in Rev 18:4-6,

Rev 18:4-6,  And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

5  For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

6  Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.

Not only in the end of time have we a need to get out of our church, but at any time in history. That is how the Reformation started, and that is why the Reformation took Northern Europe by storm.

But let us ask ourselves another question: Are we close to the end?

#3.       Are We Ready? (Rev 22:18-19, Mark 11:12–14, Mat 24:32–34, Rom 8:2)

All the evidences indicate that we are presently living close to the end of time. However, we should not be looking into the world, but in the Bible, to find acceptable interpretations of the Scriptures. According to the Bible, the days near the end of time will be similar to the days of Noah just before the flood, which were initiated by unequally yoked marriages, and this led to great wickedness in the earth and to every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart being only evil continually. Remarkably, the scourge of the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries is the phenomenon of divorce and remarriage after divorce, which actually is the result of unequally yoked marriages. And if we listen carefully to what the Lord Jesus said about these times, we begin to understand why He said, “They were marrying and giving in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the ark.” There is nothing bad about “marrying and giving in marriage?” It is only bad if this is the result of divorce, which by itself is the result of unequally yoked marriages. And now we understand why God began Genesis 6 with a lament about unequally yoked marriages.

The Lord also said that as it was in the days of Lot, even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. What was characteristic of the days of Lot? Homosexuality was at an all-time high in Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim. Today homosexuality is also at an all-time high all over the world, especially in these United States. It is true that these conditions also have occurred in the past, but when these occur at the same time that much apostacy in the churches takes place, then we have an indication that we are indeed close to the end of time.

Has this gospel of the kingdom been preached in all the world? Yes it has! And did the Lord not say that when this gospel of the kingdom has been preached for a witness unto all nations, then the end will come? Indeed He did say that. All nations have heard this gospel through the radio or some other means. Not every individual has heard this gospel, but every nation has.

Has the great apostacy occurred in the worldwide church? Yes it has! Almost all denominations have succumbed to a watered-down gospel in which Christ has suffered for the sins of every human being who has ever lived. Almost all churches have taken this first step into Arminian theology.

Has the man of sin, the Antichrist, appeared on the scene with signs and lying wonders? Yes he has! The Antichrist, as the incarnation of Satan, has appeared in almost all the pulpits in the world today, preaching false gospels that lead people into damnation, because they do not want to receive the love of the truth of the Bible. People rather want to hear what their preacher says and be done with it. They have no interest at all in studying the Bible to read exactly what God has said. Especially the younger generation does not want to hear it. Most of them have no interest in studying the Bible.

Has the abomination of desolation appeared in the temple of God? Indeed it has! The temple of God is the church. Many denominations have become maintenance ministries, supervised by hirelings who do not protect the sheep against the false doctrines of the wolves. Not only the Arminian gospels but also the charismatic gospels have taken the church by storm all over the world, unhindered by the churches that have left the back door open to allow all kinds of errors to slip in. Women as preachers, divorce and remarriage, and extra rewards at the end of time are all permissible now. Why are these gospels an abomination in the sight of God? The charismatic gospels violate Rev 22:18: “You shall not add to the words of the prophecy of this Book,” and the Arminian gospels violate Rev 22:19: “You shall not take away from the words of the Book of this prophecy.” All those who violate Rev 22:18 and 19 are subject to the wrath of God, for they have created for themselves idols that they worship instead of the true God of the Bible.

In Mark chapter 11, the Lord Jesus Christ cursed the fig tree, and herein we can see that He made a prophecy concerning the nation of Israel. We read in Mark 11:12–14,

12  And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:

13  And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.

14  And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter forever. And his disciples heard it.” (Mark 11:12–14)

Why did the Lord Jesus curse the fig tree? Did the Son of God not know that it was not the season for figs? The Lord did this deliberately to give us the spiritual meaning of that curse. Only if we recognize that the fig tree is a symbol for the nation of Israel can we make sense out of this story of the cursing of the fig tree. The Lord Jesus was hungry. Does that add anything to the equation? Yes it does. In His human nature, the Lord Jesus had an earnest desire that Israel might bear fruit, for He, too, was a Jew by nature. This, then, is the reason the Bible records that Jesus was hungry, when He obviously knew there were no figs. How did the Lord Jesus know that the nation of Israel would not turn to the gospel? He knew of God’s curse on the nation of Israel as recorded in Isaiah 5:5–7 and in Matthew 21:41–43. Except for a remnant chosen by grace, the nation of Israel could not be expected to bear spiritual fruit. God said so in Romans 11:5–10 and in Romans 11:25.

Then, in 1948, the nation of Israel miraculously became a nation again after having been dispersed throughout the world for almost 1,900 years. This was God’s doing. The fig tree is alive again, but the fig tree is only in leaf. Except for a remnant chosen by grace, the fig tree does not bear spiritual fruit. God proved to us the truth of the prophecy stated in Mark 11:14 and in Romans 11:25. But there is another reason God revived the nation of Israel in 1948. We read in Matthew 24:32–34,

32  Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33  So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34  Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled

Yes, leaves, but not spiritual fruit. The Lord Jesus said that this is a sign that the end is near.

The world and the church have become one. The olive tree, representing the church, has developed into the harlot Babylon of Rev 17 and 18 and is now in full view. How did this come to pass? Let us begin at the roots of this olive tree. What is the problem with the roots? Most people are not joining churches anymore, because they believe that they are already saved and their spiritual growth does not need this dead weight. But most people have not heard the gospel of the Bible—the gospel of sin, hell, repentance, merciful grace, the true cost of the atonement, the covenant of grace, the love of Christ poured into our souls, and the love of the saints for Christ. They have been born into the church, or they like the atmosphere, or they like the feel-good gospel that is preached in many churches, but there is no conversion. And most pastors are not preaching the true gospel anymore, because they do not like it or because they have not heard it at their seminaries either. And so what does a modern church look like? The focus is on the outward signs: a nice building, a large choir, friendly people, many programs, and emphasis on much physical healing by the power of the Holy Spirit, and much ceremonial hoopla.

And now look up to the branches of the tree: What are the fruits of the harlot Babylon as the congregation experiences her? They will hear a friendly social gospel: health, wealth, a friendly church, and a friendly government who will permit abortion on demand. They can have evangelism budget cuts before making budget cuts on the maintenance of the building; it must look nice. They will understand that they can give the people exciting experiences but will deemphasize inward signs, such as being born again; promote women leaders in the church; have women serve as elders and preachers; prepare lists of benign questions for Bible studies so that they can avoid controversial doctrines and present a good-psychology gospel; elevate the wisdom of men—especially the wisdom of ancient church fathers; avoid talking about hell, as there is no hell in their view; allow for divorce and remarriage after divorce, and ignore that the family is in decline throughout the country; have no fear of God, for in their view, perfect love casts out fear. They preach a gospel of “do-it-yourself salvation,” a gospel that gives members confidence that they have done something for their salvation; In these churches, members are free to go to whatever church they like on Sunday as well as on Saturday. They may practice birth control in any way they like, even through abortion—“It is only a fetus, anyway,” they say. To witness in these churches is optional, for God loves everybody and judgment day is at least one thousand years away. They do not talk about sacrifice, for God does not want His children to suffer. To them, it is not God’s plan that we should suffer. They believe that Christ has done all He could to save this country from going to the dogs, and that it is now up to us to make the best of it and make wise decisions.

But what is God’s response to all these false teachings that are now present in great abundance in the churches? God says, “Who really is their Lord?” If they were born again, their lifestyles would also show it. But their works are only an indication that their doctrines are false. And furthermore, paraphrased, we hear the Lord saying from 2 Thess chapter 2, “Because you have done this, because you have failed all these tests by which I was testing your faithfulness to Me and have fallen into these dreadful sins, therefore I will also make you fail My last testing program by making you blind to it. This is how I will do it: I will give you a craving for supernatural experiences through which you will begin to worship gods of your own liking and according to your own imagination. Then I will give Satan authority to accommodate your sinful requests for supernatural events through miracles, signs, tongues, dreams, visions, and angel visitations, of which I told you before that I want nothing to do with, for the just shall live by faith and not by seeing signs and wonders. But since you seek other revelation because you are not satisfied with only the Bible, therefore I declare to you: have it your way. But the path that you have voluntarily chosen will lead you into the depths of Hell.”

Are we ready? Most people in these United States are not ready. When the Lord Jesus appears there will be much weeping and wailing. But look at the opportunity the Lord has given us. We understand that most people have not heard the true Gospel. For example, look at Rom 8:2,

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

Most people have only heard about the law of sin and death; sin and the penalty of sin which is death. But we have the opportunity to tell people about the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, and how the cross of Christ has made the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus the good news of the Bible. Have we learned about the good news? Have we heard that salvation is all by the grace of God, and that it is totally a free gift? And so, these things should have us excited about the work God has opened up for us. And be not discouraged by some negative people we meet along the way. We must maintain the joy of knowing that we have been saved. This world is going to the dogs, but we look forward to the appearance of the Lord on the Last Day. “Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.”  AMEN.                  Let us turn to the Lord in prayer.
