Reward, Rewards and To Reward 1/14/2009 ßà
There are 27 Hebrew words that have been translated at least one time into Reward*, and there are 7 Greek words that have been translated at least one time into Reward*. This makes any study of the doctrine of rewards very difficult. If we build a doctrine based on one of the verses, and we want support for this doctrine from other verses, then we should be careful to select only those verses that contain the same Hebrew or Greek word that we build our doctrine on. God wrote the Bible, and God chose to use different words for reasons that He only knows. Therefore we should honor Him and respect His wisdom in choosing different words. Therefore we have collected a list of all the possibilities where a doctrine of rewards could be derived from, and we have summarized the various meanings of Reward* that we find in the Bible. This is an important subject matter, for a false doctrine of rewards is a source of false gospels of salvation, leading to condemnation rather than salvation.

The doctrine of “extra rewards” in the life hereafter is like a pernicious disease overtaking the Church today. Like a pernicious anemia: hidden and deadly.
Isa 1:23 This was the Church in Isaiah’s days.
Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
Gen 15:1 What more do we want?
After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
I Cor 9:16-18, This is our extra reward:
For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward <3408>: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
What is my reward <3408> then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
The Lord Jesus said explicitly that the “extra rewards” we receive are not in the life hereafter, but in this life. In three of the narrative Gospels it is written, and all three agree to this.
Mt 19:27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
Mt 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Mt 19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold (implied: ”in this life”), and shall inherit everlasting life (implied: “in the life hereafter”).
Mt 19:30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
Mr 10:28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.
Mr 10:29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,
Mr 10:30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
Mr 10:31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.
Lu 18:28 Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.
Lu 18:29 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,
Lu 18:30 Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.
Watch out for false teachers (2Pet 2:1).
